M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi: A Heartwarming Tale of a Kickboxer and His Family

M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi is a 2004 Tamil-language action drama film directed by Mohan Raja and starring Jayam Ravi, Asin Thottumkal, Nadhiya and Prakash Raj. The film is a remake of the 2001 Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi.

The film revolves around Kumaran (Jayam Ravi), a kickboxer who lives with his mother Mahalakshmi (Nadhiya) in Chennai. Kumaran is very close to his mother, who is separated from her husband Eshwar (Prakash Raj), a former kickboxing champion who lives in Malaysia. Kumaran falls in love with Malabar (Asin Thottumkal), a girl from Kerala who studies in his college.

Kumaran's life takes a tragic turn when his mother dies of a heart attack. On her deathbed, she tells him to meet his father and reconcile with him. Kumaran reluctantly goes to Malaysia to meet Eshwar, who is now married to another woman (Aishwarya Bhaskar) and has a son. Kumaran feels alienated and angry with his father, who tries to bond with him and train him in kickboxing.

Kumaran also faces challenges from Eshwar's rival Anand (Subburaj), who wants to defeat him in the ring. Kumaran has to overcome his resentment towards his father and prove himself as a kickboxer, while also winning Malabar's heart.

M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi was a commercial and critical success, winning two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South. The film was praised for its emotional appeal, performances, music and action sequences. The film also marked the debut of actor Vijay Sethupathi, who appeared in an uncredited role as a boxing spectator.
